Independent Guidance for the Owner
What Avalon Haus is, in plain terms.
Avalon Haus is an independent residential construction advisory and homeowner-education consultancy focused primarily on custom residential construction.
We help homeowners make informed decisions, document critical details, understand what's happening during construction, and verify important work before subsequent construction conceals it.
Avalon Haus works alongside architects, engineers, builders, designers, inspectors and trades — while maintaining an independent, owner-side perspective throughout.
Beauty is only the beginning.
Much of what determines whether a house performs well for decades will eventually disappear behind drywall, siding, roofing, tile, and cabinetry.
Avalon Haus exists for the parts of a home that vanish before you ever move in — the flashing, the framing, the envelope, the systems. We help homeowners understand, plan, document, and verify the quality of their homes, especially during new custom construction.
Behind the beauty is where performance begins.
The Avalon Standard™
Five principles. One way of thinking about a house.
Not five unrelated claims — an interconnected framework Avalon Haus uses to evaluate residential construction, from the plans through the final punch list.
Healthy
Indoor air quality, moisture management, low-emission materials, ventilation, and filtration — assemblies built to reduce the conditions that lead to mold and unhealthy indoor environments.
Durable
Assemblies that manage water, weather, movement, and normal aging intelligently — construction designed to last, not just to pass inspection.
Efficient
Building-envelope design, insulation, air sealing, HVAC strategy, and glazing guided by sound building-science principles.
Beautiful
Architectural and design intent protected throughout construction — because lasting beauty depends on what's built beneath the finishes.
Responsible
Informed decisions about materials, resources, lifecycle, maintenance, and resilience — selecting systems appropriate to the climate, budget, and intended lifespan of the home, rather than adding complexity for its own sake.
A Home Is a System
The five principles rarely act alone.
A window is more than a window.
Verify Before It's Covered
What you can't see may matter most.
Waterproofing, flashing, sill pans, drainage planes, framing connectors, air sealing — once the finishes go on, mistakes become expensive and disruptive to diagnose. Drag the slider, or use the buttons, to see what's underneath.
How Avalon Haus Helps
Guidance organized around the life of your project.
Services are customized to each project's needs — this is the general shape of how Avalon Haus works alongside homeowners from the first decision to move-in day.
Before You Build
Plan with clarity
Important decisions become more expensive to change once construction begins. Avalon Haus helps establish priorities and organize critical information before work starts.
- Owner's Design Program
- Plan & specification review
- Material & product research
- Healthy-home priorities
- Builder RFP / proposal support
- Preconstruction documentation
While You Build
Stay informed
Avalon Haus observes, reviews, and documents progress against the plan — keeping the owner informed without stepping into a builder's or architect's role.
- Milestone construction observations
- Plan-to-field comparison
- Field documentation & photos
- Issue & decision tracking
- Owner reporting
Before It's Covered
Verify what disappears
Avalon Haus identifies key milestones where important work should be documented and reviewed before drywall, siding, roofing or tile make it difficult to see again.
- Waterproofing & flashing sequencing
- Building-envelope review
- Framing connector observation
- Air sealing & insulation review
- Shower & wet-area waterproofing
Before You Move In
Close out with confidence
A clear record of what was decided, installed, and verified — so the owner starts life in the home with real documentation, not guesswork.
- Completion review
- Punch-list support
- Systems documentation & manuals
- Maintenance planning
- Project closeout
Avalon Haus observes, reviews, documents, compares, and verifies — it does not replace municipal inspectors, engineers, architects, or third-party specialty inspectors, and does not perform services requiring professional licensure.
Where Avalon Haus Fits
An independent advisor, working beside the owner.
A typical custom home involves several licensed professionals, each responsible for their own scope. Avalon Haus represents the owner — helping navigate information across the project.
Better information helps good teams build better homes.
Methodology
A more informed way to build.
Plan
Clarify priorities before decisions become expensive.
Document
Create a clear record of specifications, selections, decisions, and field conditions.
Verify
Review and document critical work before subsequent construction conceals it.
Understand
Give the homeowner enough context to participate intelligently in important decisions.
Project 001
Building the Avalon Standard from the ground up.
Project 001 is the first ground-up application of the Avalon Standard — a custom residence now in preconstruction on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The project will document decisions from site planning, design, and engineering through specifications, construction, commissioning, and occupancy — serving as a transparent case study of the Avalon Standard applied in the real world.
Project 001 is also the founder's own residence, which makes the documentation candid and complete from day one.
Follow Project 001The Avalon Journal
Field notes, building science, and Project 001.
The Journal is now publishing practical homeowner guidance, field notes, and Project 001 research — beginning with a clear explanation of where owner-side construction advisory fits in a custom-home team.

About the Founder
A career built on making complicated things happen correctly.
Julia's background is in high-level experiential production, luxury automotive, and motorsports — work that lives or dies on details, sequencing, vendor coordination, and flawless execution under pressure. That discipline now shapes Avalon Haus.
Preparing to build her own custom home, Julia found a recurring gap: homeowners routinely invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in construction without an independent, owner-side resource whose only job is helping them understand, document, and verify important decisions. Avalon Haus grew from that gap — built on research, preparation, documentation, and relentless attention to detail.
